Our Story

The Insides Company was established in 2017, building on research conducted at the University of Auckland Medical School. Initially focusing only on The InsidesTM Systemfi, the company has since broadened its scope, expanding its technologies to service the emerging market of chyme refeeding.

Our Team

The Insides Company develops life-changing medical devices for people with chronic and acute intestinal conditions including inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. Our mission is to empower patients to take control of their condition.

Garth Sutherland

Chief Executive Officer

Garth has +20 years' international commercial experience in the med-tech industry. Garth founded and grew digital health company Adherium, executing a global distribution agreement with a world leading pharmaceutical company, raising more than $50M in venture capital, and executing an initial public offering on the Australian Stock Exchange achieving a +$100M market cap.

Professor Ian Bissett

Founder & Chief Medical Officer

Ian is a Professor of Colorectal Surgery, and adult lead of the NZ National Intestinal Failure Service - a key opinion leader in gut nutrition. Ian has been a pioneer of nutrient recycling and is passionate about advancing our technologies.

Associate Professor Greg O'Grady

Executive Director, Founder & Chief Scientific Officer

Greg is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at the ADHB and Associate Professor at University of Auckland. He has extensive leadership experience, holds a PhD in biomedical engineering and has a passion for developing breakthrough medical devices.

Dr. Dennis Row


Dennis was co-founder & CEO of Rebis, that was acquired in 2002 for US$60m. Dennis then joined Cyra Technologies that was acquired in 2001 for $150m. Dennis spent 10-years as a General Partner of Endeavour Capital. He is Chairman of the ICE Angels’ portfolio company Glory League, and a founding partner of Tuhua Ventures.

Dr. John Davidson

Executive Director, Founder & Chief Operation Officer

John holds a PhD in biomedical engineering, which he utilities to bridge the gap between the medical and engineering world. He has a background in clinical collaboration and operations optimization.

Rob Davidson

Executive Director, Founder & Chief Technology Officer

Rob has a background in mechanical engineering, entrepreneurial businesses and developing disruptive technologies. He holds a number of patents and design awards for previous work.

Tina Mason

Quality, Regulatory & Sustainability Manager

Tina is a Regulatory Affairs & Quality Specialist and a IRCA lead auditor with over 25 years of experience and proven track record in the medical technology space with leading healthcare companies including Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Arjo, and Adherium.

Duncan Cunninghame

Business Development Manager - Europe & UK

Duncan is a med-tech commercialisation expert based in Europe. Previously Duncan was at Orthocare Innovations (Seattle), Adherium (ASX), and JunoFem (Fem-tech). Duncan has BEng Hons. in Biomedical Engineering, a BSc Physiology, and has completed CFA Level 1.

Emma Ludlow

Stoma Nurse

Emma has extensive ostomy patient management across NZ and Australia. She has over 10 years experience in general surgical, wound care and hospital in the home experience that supplements the holistic ostomy care she provides.

Kaitlyn Chu

Clinical Design Engineer

Kaitlyn has a background in Biomedical Engineering with experience in medical device product development. She is passionate about improving user outcomes and enhancing the patient care pathway.

Natasha Khalova

R&D Engineer

Natasha is an experienced in cross-discipline engineering, NPI and R&D for lean and agile manufacturing systems of electronics and medical devices. She is a specialist of production processes in both in-house manufacturing and contract manufacturing.

William Lin

Commercial Analyst

William has a BSc in Physiology and Masters in Bioscience Enterprise. William has experience in technology transfer and commercialization of medical and health technologies, engaging regularly with industry affiliates and university researchers. He was also the lead analyst for the 2019 TIN & CMDT New Zealand HealthTech Insights report.

Katie Rice

Grants & Awards Manager

Katie holds a master's degree in public health with over a decade of experience in healthcare, including systems quality improvement, clinical trial coordination, and research funding management

Will Charles


Will is the Executive Director Commercialisation at Auckland UniServices. Will has had extensive senior commercial experience in businesses in Europe, Asia and New Zealand where he held executive positions at a number of companies including Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, Roche, Celltech and Wolters Kluwer.

Associate Professor Andrew Stevenson

Andrew is a colorectal surgeon and Head of Colorectal Surgery at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and Associate Professor at The University of Queensland

Nancy Yopp

Director - Regulatory Affairs

Nancy has 35+ years of technical manufacturing, product commercialisation and regulatory compliance experience obtained in the US and NZ medical device and pharma industries. She is Managing Director of Brandwood Biomedical NZ, a regulatory affairs and quality consultancy, on the Advisory Board of the University of Auckland Medical Tech Centre of Research Excellence (MedTech CoRE) and a past Board member of MTANZ.
